Liposuction versus tummy tuck

--
When do you need liposuction and when do you need both?

Liposuction sucks out fat from the body. Therefore, it is good to eliminate localized fat deposits.

The most common places for liposuction are the abdomen, thighs, back, and arms. Lipo can also be done in many other places including the face, chin, and neck.

Although liposuction is a relatively simple procedure, like any other plastic surgery procedure, it too has risks. The more the amount of fat extracted, the higher is the risk.

The ideal liposuction patient is a person with generally good health, normal or almost normal weight, and relatively small amount of fat to eliminate.     Read more on liposuction

Tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure to eliminate excess fat and skin from the abdomen. It may also involve tightening of the abdominal muscles. Usually if the patient has excess skin in the abdomen region, this is the only option to eliminate it and give a flat or almost flat tummy. This is a common condition after pregnancy, particularly women who gain a lot of weight during their pregnancy and then fail to lose it.

In many cases the doctor does a combination procedure that includes both a tummy tuck and liposuction. The doctor first eliminates excess fat with liposuction, cuts the excess skin, and if necessary, tighten the abdominal muscles, before closing the skin in the lower abdomen.

Tummy tuck, according to the American Association of Plastic Surgery, is a major surgery. It usually requires general anesthesia and then there is a relatively long and painful recovery period. This surgery leaves visible scars but you get a totally flat tummy if you did not have too much fat and almost a flat tummy, if you had a lot of excess fat and skin.

Which is better for you?
Only your doctor can tell you for sure after examining you. But if you have considerably excess skin in the abdomen, most probably you need a tummy tuck. If on the other hand you have little or none extra skin and mostly fat, you need only liposuction. To have a major surgery to eliminate a little extra skin is not a good idea and most doctors will not do the surgery because the patient will get visible scars and take unnecessary risk.
