It was approved in Europe in 1999 to increase the volume of depressed areas, particularly for the
correction of skin depression, including skin creases, wrinkles, folds,
scars, and eye rings. In the USA at this time (7/2005), it is not approved
to treat wrinkles.
Facial fat loss, or lipoatrophy, is the loss of fat beneath the skin, which
can result in sunken cheeks, indentations, and hollow eyes. The makers of Sculptra™ say that it is a
safe, synthetic, and biocompatible material that is injected below the
surface of the skin in the area of fat loss.
It provides a gradual and significant increase in skin thickness, improving the appearance of folds
and sunken areas. No skin testing is required.
Sculptra (poly-L-lactic acid) has been safely used outside the United States since 1999 in over 150,000 patients under the trade name New-Fill™. It is also used to treat wrinkles and skin folds in Mexico, Brazil and other countries.
Are the results immediate?
No, the results from Sculptra are not immediate. Sculptra provides a gradual increase in skin thickness. Right after the treatment you will see
immediate improvement, but this last only a few hours or days; the final results can be seen in a few weeks after the original treatment. Your doctor will decide if additional injections are needed.
Follow up treatments may be needed to maintain the desired effects.
