Aguas aguas Mexican Fruit Juices

In Mexico and all over Latin America you can buy aguas o frescos naturals (natural drinks or juices) from vendors on the streets or in commercial establishments. These drinks are delicious; however, in its natural form they have way too much sugar. If you substitute the sugar with a sweetener, you will eliminate the empty calories and get pure natural flavor.

Rosehips or Rosa Jamaica
You can buy tea or the pure petals of the Rosa Jamaica in Spanish shops and some health food stores around the country. Rose hips are rich in many nutrients, but particularly in vitamin C.

2 cups of Rosa de Jamaica flowers
Sugar or sweetener (to your gusto)
About 48 ounces of water

Put some flowers (depending how strong you want it) to boil in about 2 cups of water. As a general rule anything from 1 cup to 2 cups of flowers makes about 6 glasses of drink. Add 3 cloves, a pinch of nutmeg and a cinnamon stick to the water and let it boil for about 15 minutes in low flame. Let it cool dawn

Drain the flowers to obtain the juice and mix with additional water and sugar or sweetener. Add ice and put it in the refrigerator to chill it for serving.

You can also drink it hot.

Other aguas include diluted juices of most fruits for example: mango (raw and ripe), melon, watermelon, blackberries, oranges and all citric fruits, papaya among many others. You may dilute the fruit juice in water or in milk depending on your taste and the fruit used.
