Tips on learning a foreign languages

Learning a new language is both an adventure and a source of frustrations, it is always a challenge and it can be frustrating. These are some tips to succeed on learning a foreign language.

Practice, practice, practice
Learning a language is about repetition. Try to always practice what you know. Do not waste any occasion you have to speak it, read it and understand it.

For instance, if you are learning Spanish, go shop in a supermarket where there may be Spanish speaking employees and try to talk to them.
.

Join a language club or make your own if you cannot find it. Browse magazines in your language of choice in the bookstore and try to watch television programs in that language, though stick to drama/entertainment rather than delving into news right away.

Small but consistent steps. Study every day. Put it on your schedule. Maybe it is just 5 minutes each day, but it has to be done regularly without fail.

It is an adventure. Learning a language has to be fun. Even if you are learning it because of your job, you must still try to have fun doing it. Why is someone going to try to learn something that is not enjoyable? If you enjoy it, it will be easier to study, to practice, and therefore, easier to learn.

The fastest way. Forget about the fast and easy way to learn a language - it doesn't exist. This sounds like losing weight with one of those magic pills. There are no known shortcuts to learning a language.

Correct. Learn it well from day One. Do not accumulate mistakes, and try to learn right pronunciation and grammar from the start. In the beginning, this will be tedious and it will look as if this is slowing you down in your learning, but long-term this is the best way.

Immersion. Vacation in a country that speaks the language you are learning. I learned Italian on a learning vacation in Florence. It was not only a remarkable vacation; it was also cost effective. Within a matter of weeks, I was able to hold a conversation in Italian because as I learned the language, I also got a chance to practice it with my host family and other Italians that I met everywhere.
