Self esteem and cosmetic surgery -

Can plastic surgery make you happier? Can a smaller, shapely nose or flat tummy make you feel better about yourself?

That happened to Sharon Osbourne after she underwent many plastic surgery procedures. She declared that her self-esteem went through the roof. Apparently, she had serious body image issues prior to the surgery even though she had a loving husband, a successful career, and a caring family and ..... lots of money.

According to many surveys, plastic surgery does boost self-esteem in most cases, but a recent study suggests that women who have breast augmentation surgery done for cosmetic reasons are three times as likely to commit suicide than the general population. Really a shocking finding.

The scientists believe the problem is due to issues of low self-esteem and poor body image. Some of these women who have breast implants may expect a total personality transformation  and have better relationships with their partner after the surgery.

The study suggests that cosmetic surgeons should evaluate women for psychological problems before carrying out any such procedures.

Having the right expectations from plastic surgery is important before you undergo the procedure. Plastic surgery is not a substitute for dealing with psychological issues or conditions such as depression. These are a few questions to ask when you want to have plastic surgery:

Do I have low self-esteem?
Do I have a poor body image?
How do I feel about myself/my body?
How will I feel if my body would change?
Is there any other way I can change my body? (For instance, can I get rid of that extra fat on the tummy through diet and exercise rather than a liposuction or tummy tuck?)
What else is bothering me?
What will I do if I am still not satisfied with my body after cosmetic surgery?

Talk to your doctor about your expectations from the surgery and if you think you have self esteem issues get help from a therapist before making your mind about plastic surgery.
