Off-season Vacation in Cancun, Mexico
-

--
Cancun is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world. And there are many reasons for it: great beaches, wonderful people, top restaurants, great hotels and night life, archeological marvels close by and so much more.

--

During high season, when we are freezing in the US, particularly in the north, or during spring-break time when most of the beaches in the US are still not yet warm enough for swimming, the hotels in Cancun can be very expensive.

However, you do not have to go to Cancun during high season.  As soon as the weather warms up in the USA the prices go down in Cancun (avoid at all cost the spring break time).  In fact if you are a smart Latina who wants to have a great time without spending a fortune then it is much better idea to travel to Cancun during off-season: the beaches are less crowded, hotels/airlines/restaurants are cheaper, the service staff pays you more attention because they are not stressed-out, but most importantly, Cancun offers a variety of attractions during the low season to attract more visitors. Cancun is a wonderful place to enjoy whatever outdoor activity you like, particularly if you are a water sports fan. If you love natural beauty, you will find pristine jungles and almost virgin beaches. If you love outdoor activities and do not mind company, right outside your resort you can practice swimming in clear and warm water, take a ride in a boat or have an adventure parasailing or skydiving. If your idea of a vacation is just to relax and literally do nothing, Cancun is a great place to just lie admiring the magnificent Caribbean Sea and one of the largest coral reefs in the world.

Cancun: World Cuisines at your reach

When it comes to food in Cancun you can find it all: cheap, expensive, American, Mexican, and Mexican for Americans and all types of other international cuisine. Some of the most exclusive restaurants in the area are a bargain compared to similar restaurants in the USA. In fact, what we have found from our experience is that service, even in moderately-priced Cancun restaurants, surpasses what you see in fancy American restaurants.  Cancun also has its share of cheap eateries catering to fast food lovers. Although we recommend that you avoid them, because some of them are tourist traps (designed for those of us who want American food wherever we go), but if you absolutely must have your burger with greasy French fries, please go ahead. To identify the tourist traps is easy; when you see very familiar dishes such as hotdogs, fried onion rings, and hamburgers and the menu is in English only, you know you have come to the right place. At such establishments, be careful because they are definitely not serving the Cancun residents. In these cases either you take it as an adventure or it is better to go to the international chains such as the Rain Forest Café, or our well known McDonald’s.

If you are health-conscious like me and enjoy all-natural, locally grown meals, then you can visit many local chains that serve fresh juices and healthy, delicious fast food.

When it comes to Mexican food you can venture into the town and go to eateries (the places where Cancun residents eat) where food is good, authentic, and the prices are very low.  You can also go to the many restaurants serving discerning tourists. Usually these restaurants are located in the resorts and you can find all types of cuisines there. There are also mid-range restaurants catering to the American visitors that offer good food and entertainment shows at reasonable prices. These restaurants keep changing names so a good book can tell you the latest ones. I notice that most of them are located in strip malls. Expect to pay about $30.00 for a meal for two including drinks, dessert, and tips. In expensive restaurants, expect to pay about $80.00 for a meal for two including drinks, dessert, and tips.

One of our best meals was in a local taqueria, where we had, of course, tacos, cerveza (local beers like Corona and Tecate) and a simple dessert. They played some excellent live mariachi music and we paid about $80.00 for everything. You can find these places by doing some research before you leave. They are located out of the resorts area, so you will have to venture into the town. We stayed away from using public transport but taxis are quite inexpensive in Cancun.

    What else?

Cancun offers some of the best places for scuba diving.  You may also take short trips to archaeological destinations, paraglide, and enjoy most water sports.  You can go dancing, visit spas, or just take it easy in your resort.
