You are having what is known as "pregnancy acne," but there is good news. It will most probably will go away after or even during the pregnancy and it can also be treated during your pregnancy.

Acne during pregnancy is the result of hormonal activity associated with being pregnant. Not all acne medications, either prescription or over the counter or even cosmetic, can be used during pregnancy. You should always consult with your doctor so he or she can make sure there are no risks for the unborn child.

Generally speaking the following ingredients should not be used during pregnancy

Ingredients to avoid to treat acne during pregnancy

Isotretinoin.
This is known as Accutane in the United States and as Ro-accutane and by other brand names elsewhere. While highly effective to treat acne in most women, it can be extremely dangerous for pregnant women. That is why the FDA has put strong restrictions on its prescriptions and currently a database is maintained so that no pregnant woman can be prescribed Accutane. And if you are taking Accutane and have any chance of getting pregnant, you must speak to your doctor immediately.

Retinol and Tretinoin
Retinol and other similar substances are very common ingredients in cosmetics. Although cosmetics have very little amounts of these chemicals, it is better to consult with your doctor before using these cosmetics. Other acne medications such as Retin A, Adapalene and Tazorotene should also be avoided during pregnancy.

Oral antibiotics
During regular acne treatments some doctors prescribe antibiotics. During pregnancy, however, this is not recommended.

Salicylic Acid
This is another very common ingredient in cosmetic and acne medications. This is the ingredient to watch out for when you buy an over-the-counter acne cream. It is very effective and safe but not to be used during pregnancy unless prescribed by your doctor.

What can you use safely during pregnancy?
Benzyl Peroxide
This is also a very common ingredient in acne medications and cosmetics. It is considered safe during pregnancy. While it is sold in high concentration formulations, 10% and 5% formulations are adequate for most women. According to many experts there is no reason to irritate the skin with higher concentrations and even 3% to 5% are enough. You can apply it after cleaning the skin with a gentle cleanser and before you apply the moisturizer.

Try to also use sun protection during pregnancy so that you will avoid getting pregnancy marks and acne scars.
