5 de mayo. Let's have a fiesta

--

a

"Ay que bonita es mi tierra que bonita, que linda es (how beautiful is my land, how gorgeous it is)." This is part of the lyrics of a very famous Mexican song. 5 de Mayo is soon becoming a great celebration everywhere, not only in Mexico. It is of course the perfect occasion for Mexican food and Mexican music, Mariachi, grupera, pop or any other music genre.

Some ideas to celebrate 5 de Mayo in traditional way, but with a twist are:

-- -

Decorate with balloons and paper in many colors, but try to choose a family of colors if you want a more unifying look.

Decorate the table with pictures of Mexican celebrities, create a collage and use it as a table cover (you may put transparent plastic on top, plastic covers are very Mexico cantina) or as wall hangings. You can buy a magazine and cut the pictures or get them on the Internet. You can go wild with this, so choose a theme: Mexican cinema golden age (50s), current Mexican stars, Mexican boxers, soccer teams and stars, Mexican famous brands, Mexican stars 60s, 70, 80s, etc, Mariachis, gruperos (music from Northern Mexico) and anything else you can think of.

If this is a family celebration and you are Mexican, amiga, get the old family pictures in the mix.

This decoration will be a great conversation piece.

Menu
Simplify your life and do a taco stand like the ones in the streets of Mexico. Set a table with all the salsas, tortillas and meats so that everyone can prepare their tacos by themselves.

Get an aguas (fresh drinks) stand going. This will be a drink station where you can serve any type of fresh drinks such lemonade, agua de Jamaica (rosehips drink), and any other drinks, including sodas.

Prepare a signature cocktail; it makes life simple. Pick either a Margarita in any flavor or sangria. If you like tequila, get good tequila, but if you do not like it, use any other beer or wine. Apart from Corona, there are other Mexican beers like Tequila, Negra Modelo, and Dos Equis.

Dessert: Make some flan; it is delicious, relatively easy to make, and also cheap. You can also make a cup of Mexican chocolate or Mexican coffee (café de olla).

Get the fiesta going
The most important thing should be music and dancing. Get some mariachi music to make your fiesta more real.

Throw some real diva attitude, Mexican ladies are very stylish; Salma Hayek anyone?

Have a great Mexican theme party.

Taco station food

Salsa fresca (pico de gallo).
Cilantro finely chopped.
White onion medium size chopped.
Jalapeños cut in small pieces
Lettuce finely chopped
Salsas of different types (optional)
Refried beans (canned or home made)
Meats:
The flavor comes from the sauces so the meats are very simple.
Chicken (usually it is boiled or barbecue chicken in small pieces. You may stir-fry it if you like more flavors).

Beef or pork stir fry
Shrimp - any type of cooking you want

Tortillas
Usually tortillas for tacos are corn tortillas and usually they are not deep-fried. The tortillas can be pan fried with very little fat or just heated.

You can use flour tortillas if you like.
