Is Vaseline really bad?

Questions from our readers

Is it true that it is really bad to use Vaseline because it may cause cancer?

A- We have not read any studies proving that it causes cancer. There are at this time no studies proving this.

Vaseline (petrolatum) and mineral oil are common ingredients in cosmetics, they have been used for more than a century. They are byproducts of petroleum distillation, for this reason they are cheap. Because they are cheap and do not get rancid fast (longer shelf life) they are so popular among cosmetic manufacturers.

Many dermatologists prefer these ingredients, because they do not cause allergies and are effective occlusive moisturizers.

These ingredients have the disadvantage to obstruct the pores, consequently potentially causing black heads and pimples to people who tend to get them. When a product says oil free, it really means mineral oil free.

People who prefer natural products, like myself, avoid using these ingredients, and for this reason, many products are now avoiding these ingredients. There are other ingredients in cosmetic that come from petroleum such as: propylene glycol, isopropyl alcohol, benzene and paraffin.
